Norwin High School’s student-run news production KWIN is back for a new year of broadcasting daily morning announcements.
KWIN is the news show ran by Mrs. Lauren Scheirer. It is a class that takes place during first period when the members prepare their news for the day.
Teachers and club advisors are able to submit a Google form to KWIN regarding news that should be reported to the school. Every morning, the live stream of KWIN plays in every classroom in the high school. Each live stream consists of school related news reporting, school sports, weather, and occasionally additional activities like interviews, sports highlights, technology instructions, and club/student information.
Members from previous years of KWIN are still on-air, but this year there are many new cast and crew members.
Grace Paulovich(11) and Zach Garbinski(12) have been participating in KWIN for two years; while Luke Klamut (12), Jenna Williams (12), and Joey Speranzo (12) are all new members for the 2023-24 school year.
“I joined KWIN because I thought it would be a great way to improve my public speaking,” said Williams. “Plus, some of my friends were in the class too, which is a nice bonus!”
Some members of KWIN are even interested in pursuing a career in news or broadcast journalism.
“I was interested in KWIN because being a news reporter or anchor is something I would want to pursue in life,” said Klamut. “My favorite position has to be the news anchor.”
Though the new KWIN members always seem fine on air, stage fright is always a possibility in front of a large audience.
“I sometimes feel nervous thinking about all the classes watching,” said Williams. “And I slip up on my words. But I know I’ll get used to it soon and improve.”
In addition to new cast members, there is also one new crew member, Dominic Schultheis (11). Kiera Bolton (11) and Kyle Nguyen (11) are also in the crew, and have been members for two years.
“My job is to work the audio for when we are live,” said Schultheis. “I am responsible for adjusting volumes and muting certain microphones for when people speak.”
Anyone is able to join KWIN, and current members encourage for anyone who has an interest in news, broadcasting, or just a fun class to take KWIN in the future.
“I would recommend KWIN to anyone who feels comfortable speaking to a big audience,” said Klamut. “It’s a fun class with friends and it helps improve public speaking skills too.”
