Boys Golf:
Although the Boys Golf team had some rough patches, the team played well and finished with a 4-7 overall record and were ranked 4th in their section. The team also got 4th place in the Westmoreland County 3A Championship.
Individually, senior Alexander Graham led the Knights Golf team. Graham placed 26th individually in the final round of the WPIAL 3A Boys’ Individual Championship, golfing an 83 in the WPIAL Finals. Graham said he could up his game with “small mental improvements” for himself and the team as a whole. He added that he was “proud of everyone” and “really pushed through the season to finish well.” Graham plans on continuing his golf career after high school in college, although he’s undecided right now.
There are not many freshmen on the team and, with four seniors graduating this school year, there will be many changes to the team next year.
“I’m gonna miss all of our seniors this year,” said junior Dominic Cerilli. “Alex Thomas has been one of my good friends for a while and I have loved to see his golf game improve. Aaron [Varrati] has also come a long way from freshman year to now. Logan Clark has been a big role of our team for the past two years and I hope he will continue his golf career outside of high school golf because he is such a good player. Last but not least is Alex [Graham]. He has been a big part for our team ever since his freshman year. He has been one of my good friends for a while now and he is going to do great things on and off the course.”
These high regards show how the team bonded and will continue to bond, even though the season has ended.
The players and the coach, retired social studies teacher Mr. Neil Rushnock, strive for greatness in each other, and, overall, the team learned a lot from each other this year, and are excited for next season.
“We had a lot of laughs and I think all things considered we had a fun year,” said Cerilli.
Girls Golf:
The Norwin Girls Golf team was in the green this season, finishing with a 4-9 overall record. The record went down from last year’s record of 5-6, but still placed the team at fourth place in their section, scoring ahead of Gateway and Indiana schools.
Individually, sophomore Adalena Robb led the Knights golf team. Robb placed 21st in the first round of the WPIAL 3A Girls’ individual championship, advancing to the final round. In the WPIAL 3A final round, Robb placed 19th, golfing a 98.
“This season I played pretty well,” Robb said. “I scored my lowest round in a match ever at 38 which was cool. Overall I had a good season.”
The team did not have a lot of practices this season and their record went down from last year. Although the record this year has improved when compared to years before last year, the team still feels that there are ways to build on their ability.
“The team this year definitely could have played better,” Robb said. “We had our bad days but we also had our good days. I think the team could improve on effort and wanting to get better.”
With the offseason among them, the girls on the golf team will be working on their skills for the upcoming year.
“Over the offseason I definitely am going to improve my short game factor,” said Robb.
