Tis the season for winter concerts at Norwin!
On December 7, Norwin High School’s choirs came together and performed many holiday carols to get everyone in the spirit of the season. Throughout the night, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Bel Canto and Show Choir performed. The choirs were conducted by either Lauren Scheirer, director of the Chamber Singers, or Bridget Faulk, director of Concert Choir, Bel Canto and Show Choir. The pieces performed throughout the night ranged from old classics to modern hits. Then, all of choirs came together to sing two final pieces to bring the concert to a close.
“This is the first time we are working 9 through 12 [grade] in concert choir this year,” said Bridget Faulk during the concert. “I think they are doing an awesome job.”
The night kicked off strong with four songs performed by Concert Choir, a mixed choir of all grades and conducted by Bridget Faulk. Before their final song, senior Andrew Ewing came forward, talked a little bit about Concert Choir as a whole and what their final song was going to be. After Concert Choir sang their final piece, it was time for the Chamber Singers to hit the stage.
“I like getting to see the amount of people coming out to see us and hearing the songs,” said Chamber Singer President Luke Klamut. “It’s so amazing to get to share all of our hard work with everyone.”
Introduced by Lauren Scheirer, the Chamber Singers made their way into the aisles of the auditorium to perform a musical processional. Every winter concert, the Chambers have done this musical processional as a tradition, going down their respective rows and “lighting” their candles. Each singer passed on their candle “fire” to the next person, gradually making it down their entire row. From there, the Chamber Singers eventually made their way onto the stage (while singing, of course), and continued to sing the rest of their three intended pieces.
“For me personally, this concert is special to me because it’s my first high school concert as a member of Chamber Singers and Bel Canto,” said sophomore singer Sienna DeJesus. “I’ve always wanted to be in the select choirs in high school and I can finally participate.”
Up next came Bel Canto, a select choir with all treble voices (sopranos and altos). Bel Canto stole the show with their feature of kazoos in their song “Good King Kong,” having left a lasting impression on the audience. Bel Canto sang a total of four songs, showcasing all of their hard work and love for the holiday season. After Bel Canto’s set was complete, the light was then turned to the Show Choir and their dancing extravaganza.
“I think when rehearsing for the holidays we are all a bit more excited because we get to spread Christmas cheer and joy for the season,” said Izzy Anders, junior member in Bel Canto and Show Choir. “With Show Choir, we try our hardest to interact with the audience and make connections as much as possible which is what I think makes the audience enjoy it the most.”
Dressed in their classic sparkle attire, the Show Choir executed six songs that were up-beat and contained many different solo appearances. All of their songs invited the audience to enjoy themselves and dance along in their seats. They did so well that they got countless applauds throughout their performance. On the other hand, there is much more to Show Choir than just singing and dancing; they are also making a difference. Following the concert, Show Choir went around asking for donations that would contribute to the HEARTH Shelter and Norwin In Action , two organizations to help those in need. Anders goes on to say that she, along with her fellow Show Choir members, love really making a difference in their community.
”That’s what it’s all about this time of year: making a difference,” said Anders.
Finally, after the Show Choir wrapped up their dancing, all of the choirs joined together back on stage for two final pieces: “Night of Silence” and “Celebrate!” During these pieces, the audience was encouraged to sing and clap along, which allowed them to get a feel for what all is yet to come this holiday season. On that note, another successful winter chorus concert has been completed, and everyone was sure it did not fall flat.
