Norwin wrestlers were eager to begin their season this year. Starting off with a 7-3 record for the boys and a 1-3 record for the girls.
The Knights Boys Wrestling started their season on December 2nd, and the girls on December 9th. Both teams show massive commitment, dedication, and hard-work when it comes to competitions. Many of them are even highlighted as top performers at competitions.
Boys wrestling has two duals under their belt, while the girls team has one dual, a competition type where two teams compete against each other, each sending one person per weight class to wrestle someone from the same weight class. There were two duals for the boys team so far; the Hampton Dawg and Ephrata Duals. Top performers at the Hampton Dawg Duals from Norwin were senior Nathan Campbell and freshman Landon Sidun, and the top performer at the Ephrata Duals was Sidun as well.
“I don’t really have a least favorite part of wrestling, and my favorite part would probably be the satisfaction of winning,” said senior Nathan Campbell. “I feel that I am dedicated and active in wrestling because I do it all year round, I practice all year round, and I work out all year round.”
The girls team was introduced just last year, and they are already up to 12 wrestlers and one win. They have come ready to fight this season, with a lot of tough competitions looking forward, and there are a lot of things for them to look forward to. Being a new team, there are also a lot of things for them to build on, grow from, and experience.
“I think my favorite thing about wrestling is the community and commitment you’re surrounded by,” sophomore Josephine Dollman said, captain of the Norwin girls wrestling team. “Even though Norwin’s female team consists of mostly first years they definitely aren’t afraid to get gritty. Not only that but because of the intensity of the sport the girls all can relate to each other and support each other.”
The teams have star wrestlers this year, all of the wrestlers contributing to the wrestling teams in an important way. Overall, Coach Kyle Martin and students have a lot to enjoy about wrestling and have fun while doing it.
“This group we have as of today have done a great job with dedicating themselves to the sport,” Coach Martin said. “They are embracing the mission and the grind of the sport. This group is making history, we are currently ranked the highest a Norwin wrestling team has ever been in the state.”
There was a competition for the girls and boys at the University of Delaware on December 15 for the girls and December 16 and 17 for the boys. The boys got 29th out of 166 teams and the girls got 8th place.
As the season progresses, there is a lot to look forward to. The next duals will be for the girls on Saturday, December 23rd at Bishop McCort and for the boys on Friday, December 22nd at North Allegheny.
