On February 23, the Peer Mentor and Buddy Club kicked off their first event of the year: the Three Rivers Region for the 2024 Polar Plunge in Pittsburgh. Schools from southwest Pennsylvania participated in the event sponsored by Special Olympics Pennsylvania. It was a jam-packed event with plunging, touring, and dancing outside Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
“The Polar Plunge was an awesome event,” junior Nick Patter, Peer Mentor and Buddy Club president said. “We had an amazing time hanging out with members of the PMBC. This event is always a large success in raising money for Special Olympics PA. And I hope to see even more participants next year!”
Students arrived at the action-packed event early in the morning around 10 am. Following arrival, students suited up for the freezing plunge, in a giant above-ground pool filled with water placed out of Acrisure Stadium! Following, buddies and their peers dried off for some food and ate it up for a little bit of time talking with all their friends. Then, everybody reconvened and got to tour Acrisure Stadium with all their friends. Following running around the stadium having a great time, the students came back and danced near where the plunge happened and chatted it up with friends and peers.
“The water was freezing cold! But it was an amazing time with all my friends,” said Plunge participant Anthony Altier.
This event was all in favor of raising money that would help Special Olympics funds and the Peer Mentor and Buddy Club.
“The reason Peer Buddy is so great is because of the people in it,” said club attendee Troy Horvath. “We’re growing as a community because people can see the greatness within it.”
Norwin students and attendees raised an all-time high of $4175 and had a great time!
