Norwin Senior Abigail Boyer was one of the recent winners of a prestigious scholarship, the Evans scholarship, which is worth more than $125,000 and is the largest scholarship for caddies in the country.
According to the Western Golf Association, The Evans Scholarship is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. To qualify, caddies must meet the requirements of having a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need, and outstanding character. Scholarship applications are accepted at the beginning of an applicant’s senior year of high school, as well as from college freshmen.
“I had to have a strong caddy record, good grades, and meet financial needs,” said Boyer.
Boyer currently works as a caddy at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
“I get to work outside each day with people from all different career fields,” said Boyer. “I really like to meet new people and have good experiences.”
Boyer’s sister introduced her to caddying. She switched two years ago from playing soccer to golf and she has now been caddying for four years.
Boyer’s future plans continue to stem from her love for golf and working as a caddy as she plans on attending the University of Miami in Oxford, OH to study Sports Apparel Design, in hopes of one day creating her own women’s golf clothing line.
