The Homecoming season is once again back in swing this year at Norwin and plenty of exciting activities lay ahead for students leading up to the highly-anticipated annual Homecoming game and dance. The theme for the 2024-25 Homecoming is “In the Big Apple,” after last year’s theme of “Homecoming Hollywood.”
As always, Homecoming Week opens with Spirit Week starting on Monday Sept. 23 and runs until Friday Sept. 27. The Spirit themes are: Beach Day Monday, To The Future Tuesday, Wednesday We Wear Pink, Flannel Thursday, and Blue/Gold Friday. In addition to students getting to dress up for the fun themes, Spirit Week also contributes to the rise in anticipation leading up to the game and dance.
Student Council Vice President junior Tyler Patrick says that these events also “[raise] the excitement for students.”
Preceding the Homecoming game on Friday, is the student pep rally early morning, as well as the 10th annual Homecoming Carnival hosted by the junior Class Office. The carnival will include booths, food trucks, and more for those attending to enjoy!
At the game that evening during half-time, the 2024 Homecoming King and Queen will be announced! This year’s Homecoming Court consists of freshmen, Lenya Dinh and Kaylee Vitsas; sophomores, Cami Archer and Devon Palmiero; juniors, Katie Rabo and Shae Sida; and seniors, Adi Federovich, Molly Geissler, Addy Granny, Ameer Elatrache, John Olshanski, and Mike Strutt.
Finishing out the Homecoming Week the next morning on Saturday Sept. 28, the Homecoming Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. in Irwin and will feature a number of the school’s sports teams and clubs for the community to watch and enjoy. The recently crowned Homecoming royalty will also make an appearance at the festivity.
Later that evening, the Homecoming dance will begin at 7:00 pm and end at 10:00 pm.
“I decided to keep the theme of ‘cities’ going as I believe we can go so far with the different cultures of each city,” said Student Council President Ameer Elatriche. Elatriche was also the one to come up with last year’s theme, inspired by his own trip to the city in May of last year.
This year’s theme brings with it a number of exciting new additions, as well! According to Tyler Patrick, vice President of the Student Council, they have “spent so much time thinking about what types of food make up the New York atmosphere.”
These atmospheric foods in questions include soft pretzels, pizza, and popcorn. Additionally, there will be a Kona Ice truck as well as the usual concessions in the cafeteria.
Also in the cafeteria and outside the auxiliary gym, Elatrache says that Just Dance will be making a return this year as well as the photo booth and a Central Park Photo Station.
“This year, we are offering so much more than just a dance,” said Elatrache.
