On Thursday, Sept. 19, the Norwin Quiz Bowl team had its first competition of the season. As the first of three local Westmoreland competitions at Mt. Pleasant, 16 students competed against schools across the County to determine their place for the Westmoreland finals in November. Mr. Chitester, the quiz bowl adviser, made a comeback after a few years’ absence to lead the team to victory.
“This is my first year back as quiz team advisor. I was the advisor for probably 10+ years but stepped away for a few years,” Chitester said. “Mrs. Sturm and Ms. St. Clair were the advisors during that time.”
During the Quiz Bowl competition, contestants answer questions about topics ranging from history to science. The students who answers the quickest and correctly wins. The JV record for the day was 3-1 while the varsity team finished in .500 with a 2-2 record competing against Penn Trafford, Hempfield, Latrobe and Greensburg-Salem.
“I think that our team did pretty well,” Quiz Bowl senior Molly Geissler said. “Our best areas were most likely math and science.”
Both the JV and Varsity teams studied hard before the competition and it paid off in the results with one win and one tie.
The Quiz bowl’s next competition is set to be on Thursday, Oct. 25, where the Knights can continue revving up for a successful season and the November finals.
“I will say we did alright after a rocky start and shined in the final round,” said freshmen Aiden Perry. “I think in the next events we will be a force to be reckoned with.”
