Paper, pencil, and your brain are a thing of the past. Artificial intelligence(AI) has taken over all of our lives, from the organization of our playlists to chat GPT writing student essays. AI has gone from a great place to kickstart ideas and correct our grammar to doing things for us that never needed fixing in the first place.
“You know what the biggest problem with pushing all-things-AI is? Wrong direction. I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.” Said Author Joanna Maciejewska.
Generative AI companies have compiled thousands of artists’ work, both traditional drawings and digital paintings alike, without consent to train their bots. When an AI “learns” something it combines all of the data it has to make a semblance of the image that you want. This could not be further from how art is made authentically, because a human has to understand the subject to a certain degree before we can draw it. An example of this is the human hand, AI just looks at thousands of hands and tries its best to generate something similar, no matter how horrifying the result. Human artists look at the hand’s anatomy and learn to understand how to draw it through several layers and angles. AI does not learn like humans do, and we need to stop treating it like it does.
That said, there are plenty of amazing uses for AI in everyday life. Like I said earlier, you can ask AI to organize the perfect playlist for you, or to check your grammar in your writing. Grammarly, a well known grammar and spellchecker uses AI to spot mistakes in writing and help you improve. These tools can help you get a head start and learn quicker, instead of generating it all for you like Chat GPT and other similar sites. Being able to create and do things on your own is a vital part of life that we can’t loose.
All in all, there are a lot of ways to use the ever-developing technology that is AI, and we should not use it to replace the hard earned human thinking and artistry that we have built up over the course of generations.
