On Oct. 11-13, students from the Model UN(MUN) club traveled to Gettysburg College with Fox Chapel High School on a bus to participate in Gettysburg’s first annual MUN competition. Norwin MUN delegates won the best small school delegation. The qualification for a small school delegation is to send 10 or fewer students to the competition.
Each student participated in their assigned committee, passing bills and gaining experience on how real life UN meetings are held. There were five committee rooms, the United Nations Committee on Digital Communication and Social Media, the UN Security Council on Stabilization and Security in Haiti, the Constitutional Convention Committee, A State of Khaos: Titans, Gods, and the Birth of Earth, Olympus, 2,000 BCE, and Removing the Snakes from Ireland: Irish War of Independence.
“I liked the uniqueness of some of the committee rooms, cause we were the Greek god Committee room,” Said junior Chloe Virdin, “It was pretty unique, I’ve never heard of one like that before.”
Three students won awards in their respective rooms. Carter Kunicky and Roman Ola won best delegate and outstanding delegate respectively. Kunicky won as the People’s Republic of China, displaying great speaking confidence and keeping in character throughout all three days.
Other than the conference, the students went to the Gettysburg Historical Museum to learn about the history of the site while getting a firsthand view of the battlefield. What we know today as the place where the Battle of Gettysburg commenced was once a farmer’s backyard and a woman’s home.
Norwin MUN is looking foreword to the next MUN travel conference at the University of Virginia in November for more experienced delegates, where they hope to keep up the winning streak!
