This year, Norwin had the honor of hosting the much-anticipated Westmoreland County Music Educators Association Chorus Music Festival, better known as WCMEA, an annual gathering that brings together the most talented choral singers from across Westmoreland County. Under the leadership of Mrs. Bridget Faulk, and her co-host, Penn-Trafford’s choral director Mr. Fox, the choir learned a total of nine pieces in their two days of rehearsal. The event, held on Nov. 15, showcased the incredible vocal abilities of students who were selected to participate. Norwin brought students from Bel Canto, Chamber Singers, and Concert Choir to perform at the event.
After a rigorous rehearsal process, students from all over the County come together to form a choir that performs a varied and challenging repertoire. The event is a highlight for students, with the chance to perform in front of a large audience and work alongside talented peers from neighboring schools.
“I love getting to work on all different types of material with different types of people,” said Sarah McHugh, WCMEA participant and Norwin Show Choir President. “Everyone in the room has one common interest, and it’s really cool to watch everyone come together to make music.”
The County Choir performance featured a diverse program, including classical pieces, contemporary works, and popular choral arrangements. A highlight of the evening was the performance of “Take What You Need,” written and arranged by Reena Esmail, which demonstrated the incredible range choir, complete with a string quartet to accompany. The message of the song featured choir students sharing testaments to what self-care means to them, with the song in the background.
One of the most important aspects of the County Choir event was the sense of collaboration throughout the evening. While students arrived from different schools, they quickly came together to form a cohesive performance group united by music.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being a soloist at counties,” said Sienna DeJesus, Norwin student and two-time soloist. “It not only allowed me to grow as a musician but also gave me the chance to connect with supportive people and make many new friends.”
