On Feb. 25 the Norwin Model United Nations(MUN) club took 23 members to the university of Pittsburgh for the annual Asia challenge conference.Through all of the different committees, the students gained a new perspective on Asia and the Pacific region as well as how parliamentary procedures go about.
According to the University of Pittsburgh’s official model UN website, “The goal of Asia Challenge is to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to learn about the history, politics, economics, and cultures of Asia and the surrounding region through a hands-on simulation.”
Juniors Elizabeth Petteway and Katherine Carol won an outstanding award for their position paper for the committee on the changing age demographics in Asia and the Pacific. Coming from the angle of their district, Hong Kong, they successfully conveyed their expertise and insight on the subject.
“Surprised, very surprised.” said Carol. “I did not get started on it until the day it was due, and I did it in an hour.”
Senior Molly Geissler won best delegate in the same room, the changing age demographics in Asia and the Pacific, as Myanmar. Commanding the room and having a strong presence both inside moderated debate and when producing working papers with other delegates was what cinched the win for Geissler.
As the second to last competition of the year, the Norwin Model UN club’s season will be ending on a high note at the African Union conference this month. As a fun cultural exchange, it will be the perfect way to end the year.
