The 2024-25 Norwin High School prom will be on home turf. On Sunday, May 3, the prom will take place at the Core Event Center, 100 Colony Drive in Irwin. Norwin High School’s prom has been held out of the area since 2013 at the Pittsburgh Shrine Center in Cheswick, and before that, on the Gateway Clipper in Station Square.
”One reason for the change in venue was to support a local business,” said Mrs. Anselmino, senior class advisor. “There are no turnpike fees, and travel distance and time are reduced, giving students more time for pictures.”
The change in venue brings the driving distance down from about 23.5 miles to half a mile (with variation depending on residence) The cost of turnpike fees previously was about $7 or $3.50 if you have E-ZPass.
While there is plenty to be aware of, some of the most important information includes: The entry fee is $70 per person, plus an additional transaction fee. For those health-conscious, the menu will consist of salad, chicken Romano, penne, roasted potato, and cupcakes. If you cancel a registration, there is a fee of $20. There is a 10-person limit per table; If your group is smaller than a full table you may be broken up and placed at different tables. Table forms are all due on April 10. It is expected you follow the school dress code, with a semi-formal to formal taste. Attendants are expected to have rides ready to pick them up when prom ends at 10 pm sharp.
Many of the rules and protocols need to be followed to have a safe and smooth prom. It is expected that attendants follow the school’s rules including behavior and time management, being disruptive will not be tolerated.
“Non-Norwin guests should have their ID ready to be checked upon arrival. Arrive on time as dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m.,” Anselmino said.
Many seniors and others are looking forward to capping off the school year at prom.
“I’m looking forward to going with all my friends. I’m glad we all got a table together because sometimes getting a table of eight people with all dates can be tricky,” said senior Miya Valecko. “No Hands by Waka Flocka is a song I hope they play this year.”
Many students look forward to the food as well as the music and friends.
“I’m looking forward to the ice cream. They had it last year,” said senior Addi Baer.
On top of the friends, food and th music, choosing a dress is also a big step in attending prom.
“I went to multiple stores and tried on thirty-five dresses. I had a budget of $300, and ended up spending about $600 almost $700 on my dress but I really really really love it and I’m happy I found it.”
All the fun and good times, comes to an end at 10:00 pm. Student officers help Core Event Center with the clean up after.
“It’s more of the venue that does it [most of the setup]. But we’re gonna tear it down and all that stuff to make sure it’s gone,” said senior class officer Garrett Henning.
As long as everyone attending is respectful and follows the rules, Irwin’s welcome to Norwin’s prom is slated to be the most convenient and inexpensive yet.
”Dancing should be appropriate,” said Anselmino. “Keep it classy Norwin!! We hardly ever have any behavioral issues at prom. If everyone follows school rules, it will be a great night.“
