For the past several years, Mr. Lloyd, a 9th-grade biology teacher, guided the freshman class office. He helped them organize fundraisers, run the dunk tank at the Homecoming Carnival, plan a visit to Fright Farm, and participate in many other events at Norwin High School. However, at the end of last school year, Mr. Lloyd retired.
Now, taking over for Mr. Lloyd as freshman class co-advisors of the freshmen class are English teachers, Mrs. Traci Braid and Mrs. Gretchen Sweeney.
“I enjoy working with freshmen and am passionate about creating a culture in which students feel valued and included,” said Mrs. Braid when asked why she decided to become freshman class advisor.
“I teach a lot of freshmen in Communications class, and I wanted to play a part in getting students more involved in school activities because we discuss that in Communications,” Mrs. Sweeney said.
The freshman class sponsors many exciting activities that help 9th-grade students transition into high school. Some of the past activities include going on field trips to Pittsburgh Pirate games, Urban Air, Fright Farm, and running the dunk tank at the Homecoming Carnival.
“The first event we have is the Homecoming Carnival. After that, we are going to try to have more flexibility to do new activities and hear from the students on what they want to do,” said Braid.
“We will organize fundraisers, but we’re also hoping that students bring ideas, and then we can create new activities,” said Sweeney.
Now that the school year has started and the freshmen have settled into their new school, the elections for this year’s officers took place the week of August 25.
“Any freshman in good standing can apply to be on the ballot, and then all freshmen are emailed the ballot on Microsoft Forms. Each freshman can select up to 7 students. The highest-voted person gets to pick their position and so on,” Braid said.
On Wednesday, August 27, the elections took place, and the new freshman class officers were elected. The new freshman class officers are as follows: Keegan Murray, President; Caroline DeFazio, Vice President; Brody Heckman, Community Outreach Coordinator; Austin Bobby, Treasurer; Nino Pagano, Social Media Coordinator; Alex Dunham, Recording Secretary; Marin Tocco, Correspondence Secretary.
They are excited to share their talents with their classmates.
“I’d like to help provide a great environment for every student to excel in,” said President Keegan Murphy.
Although we will miss Mr. Lloyd’s guidance, the freshmen class is excited for a new year filled with fun and exciting adventures.
“I adore leadership positions of any kind and always look for responsibilities that get me more involved with those around me,” said Community Outreach Coordinator, Brody Heckman.
