Knights United is a new club at Norwin High School that promotes cultural diversity and taking pride in your cultural heritage. The club had its first meeting in Dr Polen’s room 229 on Monday, Sept. 15, after school. The meeting was an introduction to the club and all its officers. For the next meeting, they plan to bring snacks and play board games.
“Knights United is attempting to promote cross-cultural understanding and communication,” said Dr Polen, club adviser.
The two co-presidents of the club are Fatima Sheraton and Alexander Marrero, the vice-president of the club is Malena DeJesus, the secretary of the club is Roman Ola, the Treasurer of the club is Preston Montag, and the social media manager of the club is Riley McIntyre.
Many students decided to join the club for different reasons.
“I decided to be vice-president for Knights United because I wanted to play a key role in fostering a diverse community of students from around NHS interested in cultural exposure,” said DeJesus.
“I decided to be the Social Media Manager because I wanted to be involved in teaching Norwin students about more cultures while also creating a community,” said McIntyre.
Some of the plans the students have on tap are Bingo and board games, field trips and other cultural opportunities.
The students felt they wanted to share cultural diversity and identity with the student body.
“I wanted to become a part of the founding of this club because I believe that it’s so important, especially in the world we live in today, that people are educated, exposed to, and accept people of other races, cultures, religions, or backgrounds,” said Montag. “By helping start this club, I hope to raise awareness for that need within our world and communities today.”
