The Norwin Girls Soccer team scheduled many tough opponents this season in Section play. So far the girls record is 4-12. Despite many losses, the girls stand strong through adversity and are pushing to end this season on a good note.
With the loss of many senior players and other upperclassmen, the team is largely made up of sophomores and freshmen. This does not mean the team is without leaders. For example, junior captain Jackie Weber and senior captains Evelyn Moore and Gabby Schoemer have taken the reigns of the Lady Knights. Together, the captains are leading the younger Knights to build a bright future for the team.
“Throughout our season, we faced many challenges-injuries, a new formation, a competitive section, etc.,” Jackie Weber, junior captain of the Lady Knights said. “These setbacks not only made us stronger, but they brought us closer together as a team. As an upperclassman and a captain on the team, I believe that with determination and strong leadership we can improve our record next year.”
The underclassmen inspire hope for the future too with up and coming players like sophomores Hannah Amantea, Elin Bash, and Kalania Phetsomphou. These players’ skills shine on the field and prove to be great teammates as well. Despite the team’s difficult match ups, the Lady Knights continue to have a positive attitude to finish off the season and are confident to succeed in the near future.
Despite the losses this year, the Lady Knights have had some promising performances that resulted in continued dominance over other teams in their section like Hempfield and Baldwin. Being in the AAAA division the Lady Knights play against historically challenging teams like Seneca Valley and Upper Saint Clair. They hope to soon have a winning streak against these teams eventually as well.
On October 11 the Lady Knights suffered a close 1-0 defeat to Mt.Lebo, but this is not all bad news because the Knights showed dominance in a 4-1 victory over Baldwin. With one of the 4 goals coming from a young sophomore Elin Bash hope is already sewn deep in the younger generations of this girls soccer. With one game remaining in the season the Lady Knights are working to finish this season out with their final game against Upper Saint Clair. These schools will be a challenge, but the girls have been hard at work every day preparing for game after game honing their skills and sharpening their minds.
Unfortunately, the Knights will not be competing in the WPIAL playoffs after the hard fought season, but the Knights will have another shot next year when they face more of the same teams that gave them grief this year next year. The battle for the next season starts now and the Knights are getting prepared every day to show up next season an entirely different team who is ready to win and answer to no other school.
