Inside the classroom: Knight’s Cafe

Knights cafe

Mackenzie Shrum and Ashley Cramer

For years a staple for Norwin High School has been the Knights Café. Students would go down and get their morning cup of coffee and breakfast muffin. Sadly, Covid prevented the café from opening during the 2021-2022 school year.

Now, the Knights Café is back but is only available for teachers. Teachers are able to order their morning coffee and muffin through a google form the night before. A free muffin comes with every order, per usual.

Teachers are given an order form with various options of coffee and baked goods to start off their day. Knights Café is a service provided by Peer Buddy Club and sponsored by Mrs.Essay. In the first period, they gather in the cafeteria to collect their supplies and start making the orders. Teachers are given a Google form and can select what they would like, these orders go directly to Mrs. Essay’s tablet which acts as a register.

“It also helps the kids with their math,” Mrs. Essay said when talking about how the register works. “A really good opportunity for our kids to learn math skills and reading skills as well as social and communication skills.”

Mrs. Essay isn’t sure if students will be able to order from Knights Café soon and says that if it did return it would be during the home room period in the morning.

“It all depends on COVID because that’s the problem because we aren’t able to serve….but we aren’t allowed to eat in classrooms,” said Mrs. Essay.

Mrs. Essay hopes that Knights Café will be able to open up to students at some point this year.

Students who participate in the Knights Café get to build valuable skills such as learning to use an oven, do simple math, and assemble orders. They calculate the total for each order and are able to charge each teacher.

“It also helps the kids with their math,” Mrs. Essay said when talking about how the register works. “A really good opportunity for our kids to learn math skills and reading skills as well as social and communication skills.”

The Knights Café has been a highlight for some teachers’ days.

“I love getting my coffee and muffin delivered in the morning,” said Mrs. Braid. “It saves me a trip to Starbucks or Dunkin, and I love supporting the Peer Buddy and Mentor Club.”

Knights Café is the highlight of not only the students but also the teachers.

“The absolute best part of the Knights Café delivery service is that I get to chat briefly with the students who are involved,” said Mrs. Braid. “Quinn and Eli never fail to put a smile on my face!”
