After finishing with a disappointing record of 8-11 in 2020 and missing the playoffs, the Norwin Knights Ice Hockey team is off one of the best starts in program history with a record of  9-1-1, as of Dec. 20, 2021.

“Our team’s success definitely can be attributed to the depth we have,” Mike Robinson, second year head coach of the Knights said. “Our third line is putting up as many points as some teams top lines.”

The Knights’ depth is shown by the teams 2nd and 3rd line having upwards of 15 points, compared to last year where the top 3rd liner had 7 points the whole season through 19 games.

“The coaches held a players’ meeting during the summer and we went over expectations and goals for the season,” said Robinson about the success of the team down the stretch into the playoffs. “The boys all had the same goal written down. Win a Penguins cup and a trip to the state championship.”

The Knights have had the goal to win a Penguin’s Cup in the A Division for the past few seasons, but this year they seem to be making it a reality. With nine graduating seniors on the team this year, time is ticking for the seniors and the rest of the team. Robinson said the seniors “help lead this team each and every night.”

“We need to continue playing our style of play,” said Robinson about his team’s chances at making a playoff run, “which is fast and high  scoring. If we do that I feel like this team will definitely succeed in the playoffs and we will reach our goal that was set this summer.”

The team only lost 2 games; one to North Hills and one to Chartiers Valley. Both of these games were lost by only one goal and one was in overtime.

The Knights Ice Hockey team is optimistic about the rest of their season with their current 9-1-1 record and first place in their division. Their next game is Dec. 21 against the 8-0 and first place in their respective division Quaker Valley at Palmer Imaging Arena at 6:30 PM.
