Rolling straight into a new season, Norwin’s bowling team competed against McKeesport High School and Serra Catholic. Both girls and boys teams split matches in their opening week. The Norwin girls fell to McKeesport with a score of 2,221 total pins at the first match but rebounded against Serra Catholic and won with a score of 2,565.

Hunter Cook (freshman) is a lefty bowler with one of the best forms, he leads the boys team during matches with his high scores.

The scoring for a bowling match is different and more complex than other people think.

“Scoring in HS bowling is 2 points per game and 1 point for total pins with a maximum of 7 points for each match,” said Coach Scott Siegel. “Whichever team has the most points after 3 games wins the match.”

Freshman Kali Siegel led the Lady Knight bowlers in the first two games with scores of 483 and 570 pins.

“I think for our first match of the season, we did outstanding,” said freshman bowler Kali Siegel. “I think that we all had some games that were good and bad.”

The high school team bowling rules are much different than the individual rules.

“They are a lot different from regular matches. You are more or less depending on your skills and how you can perform on the sport shot laid out,” said senior Justine Stolinski. “You can be an amazing house shot bowler but struggle a lot on a sport shot.”

The Knight Boys bowlers won with 2,237 pins in the first match against McKeesport but only scored 1,797 pins at the second match, falling to Serra Catholic.

“The team is playing well,” said freshman Hunter Cook. “I think we should be a little less stressed and hard on ourselves when we throw bad.”

Cook led the Boy Bowlers in both games with scores of 550 and 605 pins.

The Knights still have improvements to make and lots of things to prove.

“I feel I could work on picking up spares and stuff a lot more,” said Alex Redmond. “My goals are to hopefully get one 170 average and get in the championships as a team and for myself for singles.”

The next bowling match is on Dec. 22 in North Versailles.
