A December to remember

On Thursday Dec. 9 at 7:00 pm, the annual Christmas choral concert was held at Norwin High School to celebrate Christmas and put on an enjoyable performance for family and friends. The chorus concert consisted of the singing groups: Bel Canto, Show Choir, and General Choir.

Mrs. Faulk and Mrs. Scheirer directed the chorus and Mrs. Croes was on piano. The songs consisted of “Celebrate,” “Run Rudolph,” “Silent Night,” and “Deck the Halls.” Each student was dressed in all black with accents of red and green to celebrate the holidays.

Due to the pandemic, the annual Christmas choral concert has not been held since 2019. The concert brought a sense of normalcy to family, students, and teachers and brought joy and hope to those who are involved in creating this enjoyable show during this season.

Students prepare months before each performance and spend their time after school to practice the dances and perfect their singing. Mrs. Faulk plans practices and dedicates her time to create a well performed group of students. Each song consists of different elements, making it challenging to sing when parts come together.

“The most challenging part of preparing for the concert is breaking apart the music and thoroughly learning every part of it. Everyone has to be a strong singer independently in order to have a strong sounding group,” said Jordan Weisensee, member of the Bel Canto choir.

“Carol of the Bells is by far the most challenging piece that the students have to learn. The notes and dynamics are difficult,” said Scheirer.

Since this was the first year the choir started performing again, there was a lot of pressure to make it great.

Although there are many challenges that come along with the performance, nothing is more rewarding than being able to see the smiles on the audience’s faces when they see us perform.

“Although there are many challenges that come along with the performance, nothing is more rewarding than being able to see the smiles on the audience’s faces when they see us perform,” said Scheirer.

Music is a way for students to express themselves and show off their talent. Being a part of the choir is not only about performing, it is about self expression, self improvement, and an opportunity to offer a positive environment that students are able to decompress from their daily lives.

“The joy that we share with each other on a daily basis is one of the reasons I do what I do,” said Scheirer.

The performance was exciting and a great experience for all. The audience left the auditorium Thursday night in the Christmas spirits.

The choir will be performing other numerous shows in the upcoming months like Vespers and Graduation. The choir is looking forward to these events and will continue to practice and prepare for them.

“The most exciting thing about performing is when the curtains open. I love seeing people I know in the audience and being able to sing the songs that we have been working on since the beginning of the year, said Avery Anzelone, member of the Concert Choir.
