Summers abroad

Norwin students travel to foreign lands over the summer.

Molly Geissler (10) – Greece & Turkey

Q: Where did you travel abroad this summer, and what cities?

A: I traveled to Greece and Turkey. I explored the city of Athens and the islands of Mykonos, Santroini, Kefalonia, Rhodes, and Corfu. I also visited Kusadasi in Izmir, Turkey.

Q: How long were you on your trip for, and what did you do there?

A: The trip lasted for 11 days. During the trip, my family and I explored lots of historical sites such as the Parthenon, the ancient ruins of Ephesus, and lots of various temples in Athens. We explored the beautiful, picturesque islands of Mykonos and Santorini and visited a massive clear lake inside of a cave in Kefalonia.

Q: What was your favorite part of the trip?

A: My favorite part of the trip was soaking up all of the culture. I loved trying Greek and Turkish foods as well as lightly picking up on the languages. I’m a huge mythology nerd, so being at the heart of Greek mythology was also pretty incredible.

Q: What‘s one thing you would recommend others to do if they went abroad?

A: To anyone traveling abroad, I would recommend doing as much as you possibly can. It may seem obvious, but you never know when you may get back to the place you’re exploring.

A: I traveled to India over the summer, and spent time a couple hours away from the city of Kochi.

A: I was there for 3 weeks. My family and I traveled down rivers, saw animals like elephants and monkeys, and visited family which we hadn’t seen for 3 years.

Q: What’s one thing you would recommend to others to do if they went abroad?

A: My recommendation would be to try and adjust to new time zones as best you can, because jet lag is a pain.

A: My favorite part of the trip was just the experience of another country.

Q: What‘s one thing you would recommend others to do if they went abroad?

Gabby Gregorini (12) – United Kingdom

Q: Where did you travel abroad this summer, and what cities?

I travelled to England, Ireland, and Scotland. So essentially the United Kingdom.

Q: How long were you on your trip for, and what did you do there?

Collectively we were there a little over 2 weeks. I was in London and Liverpool when I was in England. In London I did a lot of the touristy things such as the London eye and seeing Big Ben as well as Buckingham palace. London was absolutely stunning, it was extremely clean and I felt so safe there. In Liverpool we mostly spent time visiting famous places that the Beatles played at as well as the band members’ homes because Liverpool was essentially the birthplace of the Beatles. I also visited Stonehenge which personally was one of my favorite parts of the trip because not only was the scenery beautiful, but the mystery and history that surrounds the area was extremely interesting. After our week in England we went to Ireland where we looked at old castle ruins as well as hiked the cliffs. I’ve travelled many places throughout my life but Ireland was certainly my favorite. While in Ireland we also visited Belfast, where the Titanic was built and launched. We got to see many artifacts and memorials in relation to the Titanic including a statue that was taken from the bottom of the ocean. We also went to Cork, Ireland where we did a lot of shopping and visited many Irish pubs. Being that the legal drinking age is 17 there, I was able to eat fish and chips and a Guinness while at the pubs… touristy… I know. Last but not least we went to Scotland where we visited Edinburgh castle and town. While there, the queen happened to be staying at her holiday home. We ironically were there while the queen was participating in a parade for her jubilee in regards to her 70th anniversary as queen. We saw an immense amount of guards and news stations filming her holiday home. Even in such a short amount of time getting to experience the different cultures was something unforgettable. They literally banned plastic there which as someone who thinks we need to be doing as much as possible to influence the environment in a positive way I found that very enlightening.

Q: What was your favorite part of the trip?

My Favorite part of the trip was we found a little pub and ended up talking to locals in England and they told us all about their country as well as what they think about the United States and what parts they’d love to visit. This upcoming summer I’m going to Italy, France, Switzerland, and Greece and I can’t wait!

Q: What‘s one thing you would recommend others to do if they went abroad?

My advice for anyone who wants to travel abroad especially in the United Kingdom would be to Visit the cities but also venture outside of the cities because that’s when you really get a chance to see how the locals live there everyday lives and the differences in culture.
