During the week of December 8-12, the Norwin Class Office members hosted a food drive to collect food items to donate to various food banks throughout the Norwin area. Students bring in food items to class advisers to cash in for a chance to win prizes.

By donating to the food drive, students are given the chance to enter their name into raffle baskets and a chance to win prizes, including a signed Penguins’ Malkin jersey, X-Box, Kennywood tickets, Kendra Scott necklace and earrings, and prom tickets.
Each food item that is donated is worth one raffle ticket.

Each graduating class is in competition with the other classes. Students bring the food items to their class advisor’s classroom during homeroom. The winning class in total goods donated wins a movie day in the spring in the newly renovated auditorium.
“I’m pretty sure the teachers are also competing in this,” said senior Class President Joe Cramer. “I think the teachers are competing for a dress-down week.”
Along with the food drive being hosted at the school, Norwin Class Officers, Student Council members, and show choir members have been volunteering at food banks around the North Huntingdon and Irwin areas.
“We are going to food pantries all next week, like around the community to help work and I think we’re going to probably go grocery shopping too,” said Joe Cramer. “I’ll be working at First Presbyterian Church in Irwin.”

“Especially at this time of year,” said English teacher Gretchen Sweeney. “with Thanksgiving and Christmas and so many people are feeling monetary struggles, and food and security. It’s good to work as a community too to help other people.”
