According to Wikipedia, in November 30, 2022, ChatGPT was created by an open AI research company to make humanity’s life easier and safer. It is a more advanced version of GPT 3.5 version that was made 7 months prior to ChatGPT.

Through the evolution of A.I., it has become progressively used within our daily lives, whether for schoolwork or just asking a simple question about the weather. A.I. has become a very useful and efficient tool used among high schoolers and teachers. Many consider A.I. to be a harmful helping hand because you can get caught for plagiarism and fail your assignment. Some fight that A.I. is ruining a child’s creative thinking and only provides answers that are deemed by their own bias, while others fight that A.I. can be used as a personal tutor. Over the years, A.I. has become a very controversial topic and often ends in a debate on whether it is helping us or harming us.

Students use A.I. for a plethora of things, whether that is for analyzing their essays, creating ideas for a project, or simplifying a problem, so it is easier to understand. Common A.I. tools are Grammarly, Magic School A.I., and, of course, ChatGPT.

“A.I. breaks down the problem, so it is easier to do,” sophomore Norwin student Makayla Houser said. “It also can do complex questions way faster than I can.”

A.I. works at a much faster pace than humans and has no logical errors. It provides direct and simplified directions on how to solve the problem.

“I have used A.I. a handful of times,” Houser said. “But only with permission from my teacher. It is not very liked among my teachers so, we do not use it as much as I like but we use it enough to know how to use it correctly.”

Students use A.I. when it benefits their learning or grade, unfortunately, not focusing on the consequences that could happen when they use it without permission.

“I feel like A.I. is both,” Houser said. “I use it when I truly need it, and it improves my learning progress because I start to understand my lesson more efficiently, which leads me to not need it after that. I use it as like a tutor rather than an app.”

A.I. can be used as your own personal tutor for lessons in classes you do not understand. A.I. improves your understanding of any topic because it does not contain a bias and can get more into depth than teachers are allowed, depending on the topic and regulations.

”Yes, A.I. has improved my grade,” Houser said. “But, the improvement of my grade has been mainly dependent on me rather than A.I. just doing all of the work for me.”

With the assistance of A.I., people’s grades have increased and have been the highest they have ever been. A.I. can be used as a way to generate ideas generating in your brain without fully copying what it is telling you. On the downside, many have been caught using A.I. irresponsibly and have faced the consequences.

“Most of my teachers do not like A.I.,” Houser said. “So when we are allowed to use it, they make sure we are using it responsibly, and if we are not, there will be consequences, like getting a zero on the assignment or having to do it again without the help of A.I.”
